Crossing Michigan Street should get a little easier soon. The city says construction is starting on a $75,000 pedestrian safety project along the corridor, set to be finished in November.
The plan builds on a grant-funded Mobile GR project that already called for new pedestrian flashing beacons. The Michigan Street Corridor Improvement Authority saw a chance to add more street safety work alongside those beacons and teamed up with Mobile GR to do it at the same time. The city didn’t list the exact crossings in its announcement.
Why here: the strip draws a steady crowd for dinner and drinks, and the city says being easy and safe to walk is central to keeping it busy.
It was announced alongside a bigger West Side project, three gateway arches over the Stockbridge, West Fulton and Leonard business districts. That $1.7 million job is expected to finish next spring. The city framed both as a new way of working with its corridor boards, with departments lining up behind plans the neighborhoods drew up themselves.
