If you’ve waited for a bus after a sold-out show, this one’s for you. The Rapid has been awarded $6 million from Michigan’s Infrastructure Projects Authority Fund to buy up to six more buses for busy event nights downtown.
The idea is simple: more buses, coming more often, linking park-and-ride lots with the places crowds head to, including Acrisure Amphitheater, Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, DeVos Performance Hall and the soccer stadium that’s still being built. The Rapid also points to people who work evening and weekend shifts downtown, not only ticket holders.
Part of the push came from the amphitheater’s first season. MLive reports The Rapid didn’t hear many rider complaints, but its own data showed big events slowing buses around Central Station.
Don’t look for new routes just yet. The agency hasn’t decided which lines get extra service, though MLive notes the Silver Line and Routes 2, 4, 9 and 11 tend to be the busiest on event nights. Buying buses is only half of it: a second grant of about $3 million, expected in 2027 or 2028, would help pay drivers and other running costs.
“It’s really intended to help improve the regional connections supporting downtown.”
